Procedures » Skin Cancer Excision and Reconstruction

The rate of skin cancer is rising in the United States, as it is in other areas of the world. While skin cancer is typically locally destructive, it can also be life threatening if advanced. Your dermatologist or primary care doctor may be planning to excise your skin cancer, and they may request that a plastic surgeon help close the wound.

Normally, these cancers can be removed with a rim of normal tissue around them and verified by a pathologist. However, depending on the location of the cancer, some dermatologists may choose to use a special technique called Moh’s Surgery to remove the cancer and spare as much normal tissue as possible.

These skin cancers on the face and scalp can be disfiguring once removed, and Dr. Gordley will use techniques to maximize the aesthetic result. These techniques can range in spectrum from simply shifting skin around, using skin grafts, or even transplantation of tissue elsewhere on the body.
